All over the world, people are building open-source alternatives to the platforms that run our lives and make billions selling our attention. Cooperative delivery apps. Community-owned music streaming. Federated social networks. Open-source event tools.

Grassroot hopping is the act of taking the best of what exists, co-building what's needed, and leading, advocating, and driving even more open source alternatives. Then assembling it into something communities can use and own.

Not building everything from scratch — catching everything that's being built. Hopping from grassroots repos to grassroots repos.

From running shoes to art on the wall to co-op governance.

Clara loves this network. Arnaud just discovered a whole new world of art — just by going running. The gallery now co-owns the platform that fills its rooms. That's the full flywheel.

Arnaud is an electrical engineer. Girlfriend from a dating app. A few university friends. He likes cycling and running. He recently made the biggest effort of his life: joining a running club.

It's been months. He likes running with people. He feels more connected. But he never speaks to anyone. He believes he has nothing interesting to say. They're all so cool.

One day, someone in the running club creates a community on the app. Everyone signs up — because that's where all the events will be now. This same person writes a newsletter about the best running races in Brussels and across Europe. By joining the community, you get access to her newsletter too. Arnaud signs up for the events and the newsletter. But then he starts scrolling. And he discovers who these people are — the ones he's been running next to in silence. One paints. One photographs. One organizes film screenings. He had no idea.

Now he has things to say. At the next run, he walks up to someone: “I saw your paintings on the app. They're incredible.” The ice was never really there — he just needed a reason to speak.

Months later, Arnaud has real friends. And he's finally made the jump he never dared: he started painting. Art was a foreign concept in his family, in his friend circle. But now he's surrounded by people who do it. It feels normal. He starts.

The app didn't just connect him to others. It connected him to a part of himself he was afraid to explore.

How a community works.

Someone starts it. A dancer, a gallery owner, a yoga teacher, a group of friends. They become the admin. They create a QR code and choose the first secret password.

People join in person. At an event, a class, a meetup. Scan the code, say the password, pick a username. No app store, no sign-up form — the whole thing runs in your browser.

Events are the gravity. The community calendar becomes the single source of truth for “what's happening this week.” People come back for the events. They discover the creators along the way.

The community governs itself. Members vote on decisions — password changes, new features, how things are run. The admin facilitates, but the community owns it.

Communities overlap. A dancer is also in the jazz community. An artist is in three neighborhoods. People bridge communities naturally. The web grows through real human connections.

No bots can enter. No scrapers. No fake accounts. No shameless influencers. No creeps. You showed up at the community events — that's how you got in.

No payments means no PCI compliance, no financial liability, no transaction disputes, no regulatory burden.
What's left? Blogs behind a gate + an event calendar. A solved problem. The entire backend complexity of a social platform disappears.
Simple enough that a contributor can build a feature in a weekend. Simple enough that any city can run it. Simple enough that it's sustainable on €5/month creator fees.

Subtraction is the product strategy.

Every feature removed makes the platform cheaper to run, easier to fork, harder to abuse, and more focused on what actually matters: real people discovering each other's creative lives.

You're not a user.
You're a co-owner.

One possible model: a cooperative that funds itself, governs itself, and improves itself. No investors. No ads. Just members. This is a sketch — the first builders will shape the real thing.

Members join through their communities.
Scan a QR code, say the password. Choose your role: reader, creator, event organizer, or dev. You're in — and you're a co-owner. Your name goes on the cooperative register.

Everyone pays what makes sense for their role.
Readers are free — low barrier, maximum adoption. Creators pay a small monthly fee. Event organizers and venues pay more — they have commercial interests and get the most value. Devs earn their share through code contributions. The co-op is self-funding from day one if the community is real.

Members vote. Weighted by role and stake.
Creators, event organizers, readers, devs — each class has proportional voice. Event orgs pay more, so they get more say on what matters to them. Devs earn influence through merged code. Decisions are made through open-source governance tools.

The co-op improves the platform.
Members decide what gets built. Bounties are posted for developers. The platform gets better because the people who use it are the people who own it.

Word spreads. More communities want in. More members means more revenue, more voices, better decisions. The cycle continues.

One passionate person forks the code and starts with their own community. A city hub. A niche network on the web. A dance scene. A global poetry collective. Ultra-local or worldwide — the format is open, the code is open, the principles aren't. From there, it grows organically. Bottom up. Always.

When enough communities are active, the members form a société coopérative. They choose a name. They elect governance. The city now owns its own creative infrastructure.
Natural divergence

Different age groups, different vibes, different neighborhoods — multiple cooperatives can coexist in the same city. Nobody decides this from the top. Fork again. Start again. The code is open.
